The Sound of Summer
In Japan and around the world the cicada is a resounding answer to the question "is it summertime yet?" The insects are known as the sound of summer in Japan and are often featured in animations and dramas set in the summer time. Just from hearing the droll buzzing sound of the cicada any viewer knows good and well it is summertime.
It seems the cicada lives for only a short period of time but in that short period of time it's noise is rather troublesome and bothersome to humans who are not used to it. The cicada is often seen as an annoyance and pest even though it's harmless to humans since it cannot sting or bite.
The Cicada is a creature that has a deep spiritual connection with people of the east. Since this insect has the ability to lay dormant for years at a time it is often seen as a sign of rebirth and reincarnation. It's habitual awakening also helps cement its presence as an object of rebirth. Since most cicada species molt in summer then disappears in the winter due to the cold weather. They only reappear in the heat of summer where they arise from their former nymph skin which is almost akin to a phoenix rising from the ashes of its former self in a way.
